Spelling Gem aims to let children build vocabulary with joy.
We developed word spelling exercise into a game similar to word search but with enlightenments instead of eyesight training. The time and reward systems give players great sense of achievement, it stimulates children to learn actively without parent’s monitoring. The encouragement for children to learn by themselves is a good habit which not only ease their future learning but also release parents’ time. In addition, the memory built up in this way is firmer and longer. Spelling gem can improve concentration and give confidence to kids and it makes spelling fun.
The word banks we used are words used most frequently according to word frequency.com, and words for different grades according to United State Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) standard. Words from grade 1 to grade 6 are organized in categories. All words in one category share similar property, each game is based on different categories, and category of words help users to compare and distinguish similarity and uniqueness. By learning the similarity and other patterns children can expand their vocabulary by themselves.
Authoritative words — using CCSSI standard, so that children are practicing the words suitable to their age, yet with reasonable extension.
Self-motivated system — once all the categories have been completed to the highest level, they are motivated to progress to next grade, they can have their own personalized learning path.
Straightforward feedback system — all the achievement can be viewed with a glance. Parents can easily tell how much practice children have done and how good were they.
The app is specially designed for kids that are in primary school. We know kids in this stage are weak on self-disciplined so we provide rewards as an incentive to keep them working on practice. In this way children are encouraged to become self-motived learner. Thus, it helps students to learn better, also releases parents from monitoring them.
The words and tests embedded are arranged by two criteria. First is by grade, words for each grade are suitable for corresponding aged kids, using standard of United State Common Core State Standards Initiative. This helps kids to have confidence to keep practicing also helps building their self-confidence.
Secondly, within each grade, words are put into categories, words in each category has a common property, so that student can learn words based on their similarity. For example, there are ten ‘color words’ in one test for grade 1. Other categories are synonyms, antonyms, animal words, prefix, etc. We are here to help students and family.
